Environment Agency's Rivercall service

You hear a menu of river names and press the appropriate number, then you get levels in metres above summer level. The readings are taken at 00:01 and recorded. These recordings are played back when you phone up this line.

Midlands Area - 0906 6197744 then press one of the numbers below for the river you want.

For the Vyrnwy levels below 1 metre are a scrape, but above this and when rising can be good. If it's above 2.5 metres, the gorge can get interesting, as the eddies become boils, and the last drop can hold trees.

RiverHazard
Severn
6th Sept 05
Shooting above paddlers on the Severn between Melverley and Crewgreen, on the England/Wales border. At 12.15pm yesterday I was paddling about 300m downstream of the road bridge between these two villages. I heard gunshots and was surrounded by shrapnel falling into the river all around me. I veered rapidly into the right bank to take cover and shouted out loudly and repeatedly that there were people on the water.
The shooting continued - about a dozen shots in all - and was coming from the direction of Seven Oaks Farm.
Info provided by Alastair Morrison.

There is a tree right across the river about 1/4 of a mile below the road bridge.
Banwy
4 Sep 04
There is a large tree completely spanning the River Banwy, if my memory serves me correctly, which it's not in the habit of doing, the blockage is above the first of the three grade 2 bits. It was safely negotiated by us, in open canoes, through a curtain of branches and leaves, river right, but would be very tricky for a group of novices in kayaks, and in higher river levels it could be lethal. Info from UK river guide book community page.
